Executive Summary

 

 

The Thomas Sports Group Inc. is providing an opportunity for youth to expand their horizons through participation in organized sports leagues activities. By working with mentors, our youth are exposed to the qualities of teamwork, sportsmanship, self-esteem, leadership and professionalism. Our motto is: ‘Everyone is a Winner’. Leadership and Professionalism will be the primary focus of our organization. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. will also provide for older youth an academic assistance program and all age groups a Job training opportunity for people living in the City and County of Schenectady.

 

The academic assistance program will provide, computer training, reading recovery, tutoring and behavioral management. Programs will link support with schools and parents, to giving youth added assistance with state required standards and tests. Our job training program will promote self-esteem and educate people for job searches, interviews, resumes, cover letters, employer phone contacts and inter-net job web searches. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. will collaborate with other employment agencies to expand employment opportunities for the benefit of our participants. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. has formed a collaboration partnership with the Furman Street Learning Center located at 35 Furman Street in Schenectady, NY 12304.The collaboration partnership has allows youth to participate in adult supervised sports programs and after school academic tutoring. Both organizations help encourage youth to participant in the After School Program, provided by the Furman Street Learning Center Monday thru Thursdays 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The collaboration continues to function every other Saturday morning, with the after school program providing activities from 11am – 1pm at the same time the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. sports program is in session.

 

With our diverse volunteers, participants and management team in place, we believe we are becoming a special organization. Communicating directly with, parents, schools, participants, community leaders, employment agencies and the Public Access Station Channel 16 our organization will gain the positive exposure throughout the Schenectady community needed for our success. By publishing a quarterly newsletter and our website (TSGi1.ORG) we will keep sponsors and the community directly informed of our activities and progress.

 

By offering this opportunity of the sports component for youth, the future academic assistance program and job training to the City of Schenectady residents, we believe everyone will gain the experience of participating in something worthwhile, fun and special.

 


 

 

Statement of Purpose

 

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit human service agency providing organized sports leagues, academic assistance, behavior management and job training for low-income youth and families at risk in Schenectady, New York. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. primary focus is Leadership and Professionalism. Our definition for Leadership is communicating people’s worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves. Our definition for Professionalism is that everyone shows courtesy, fairness and respect towards one another. Our organization allows us to request donated funds under our 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status for Basketball, Kickball, Flag-football, Floor-hockey, Soccer and Wiffleball league activities as well as the development programs. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. has successfully completed and organized the sports league activities, which are held through out the calendar year. Funds that are contributed will be applied to cover the costs for transportation, equipment, uniforms, trophies, facilities, insurance and other costs incurred for operating the organizations purpose. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is providing an opportunity to expand youth horizons by interacting with them and giving youth the chance to participant on an organized sports team. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. strives to motivate participation through rewarding individuals for competing and excelling in team play. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. provides the opportunity for individuals in the community to volunteer their time, energy and talents to serve children as mentors and positive role models. Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is committed to provide in near future academic assistance and computer training programs for older youth and for all age groups a job training program for people living in the City and County of Schenectady. Our programs will assist in providing education and stability.


Description of the Organization

 

 

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit human service agency providing organized sports leagues, academic assistance, behavior management and job training for low-income youth and families at risk in Schenectady, Our primary focus is to promote self-esteem, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and professionalism. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. began on July 1 st, 2002. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. presently focuses on coordinating league activities for wiffle-ball, floor hockey, kick-ball, flag-football, soccer and basketball. Activities are based on seasonal patterns. Flag-football will be held in the outdoors in the spring and Wiffleball is held outdoors in the summer. Floor hockey, kick-ball, soccer and basketball are held indoors during the fall and winter. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. mission is to also provide for all age groups a Job training program for people living in the City and County of Schenectady. Our training will help instill a positive outlook during the participant’s job search and support applicant with their new job endeavor. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. also has a vision to expand its activities that challenge children intellectually by encouraging youth to participant in our academic assistance program and with our collaborative partner and its After school program the Furman Street Learning Center as well as artistically, these activities will include chess, board games and arts & crafts. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. plans on cooperating with other organizations similar to the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. to conduct inter-league play. So participants from different organizations can come together and compete for the sake of community fellowship.

 

Funding is being contributed by local and national grants, foundations and businesses that view our organization as a worthwhile community event. Our quarterly newsletter and website (TSGi1.ORG) also provides recognition to all of our sponsors.

 

 

 

COMPETITION 

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is a market that provides sports and educational services to residents, in the City and County of Schenectady. Local organizations that offer similar services are Girls Inc., the Boys and Girls Club, Schenectady Little League and the Carver Community Center. Although each of these organizations offers outstanding services to the community, the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. feels that the variety of services it offers is appealing to all individuals. In addition, the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. offers these services at no cost to the participants. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is a successful organization because it has flexibility to collaborate with the similar not-for-profit organizations, schools and employment agencies to carry out its services. This collaboration reduces the focus on competition and allows the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. to focus more of its time and resources on serving the community.

 

 

 Market Strategy

 

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is offering a service to the community that allows children both male and female from the City and County of Schenectady to interact with one another in a diversified environment. The majority of the participants will be between the ages of 6 and 19.We plan on servicing approximately 60- 100 participants in each organized league. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. currently offers wiffle-ball, floor hockey, kick-ball, soccer and basketball as initial activities. Our objective is to expand activities, such as academic assistance for older youth and a job training program for all ages in the City and County of Schenectady.

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. is managed by individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences that have the ability to contribute to the mission of the organization. Some members of the board have had past experience in organizing community activities related to sports activities and also experience in fund raising and coordinating the processes of a human service agency. Our organization is currently seeking professionals with the knowledge and experience to staff our academic assistance and a job training program.

 

The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. recruits volunteers and participants through a variety of venues. A quarterly newsletter will report all activities and publicly recognize all participants, volunteers and sponsors. Fliers are created and posted in various areas of the community to recruit participants and volunteers. The Public Access Station Channel 16 will be utilized to communicate to the community and help our sponsors gain recognition. The Thomas Group, Inc. communicates through e-mail (TSGi1@hotmail.com) and our website (www.TSGi1.ORG), which can be linked to other human service and not-for-profit organizations similar to the Thomas Sports Group, Inc.

 

                    

 

                           LOCATION

 

 

Thomas Sports Group, Inc. presently has a home-based mailing address of 35 Furman Street orP. O. Box 4028 Schenectady, NY 12304. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. has formed a partnership with the Furman Street Learning Center. The Furman Street Learning Center located on 35 Furman Street has provided its facilities and gymnasium to allow the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. to operate a Floor-hockey and Kick-ball leagues. The Wiffle-ball league is annually held at Central Park C-Diamond and our Flag-football League will operate at Career Center at Steinmetz Playground Field in Schenectady, NY and the Junior & Senior Basketball leagues is operating at 880 Oakwood Avenue at the Career Center at Steinmetz gymnasium. The Furman Street Learning Center facility contains office space necessary to facilitate the academic assistance program and the job training program. The neighborhood and location of The Furman Street Learning Center is in the vicinity of where all our participants live, allowing them easy access to our activities.

 

 

Personnel

 

 

The personnel of the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. are comprised of three separate categories. The first category is the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors meets as stated in the by laws every other month on the second Thursday of the month, to give the organization expertise and support.

 

The second category is the Executive Board. The Executive Board comprises of members the Board of Directors that meets once a month after the regular scheduled meetings with the Board of Directors, to discuss strategic initiatives, plans and analyze issues to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the organization's activities, then report to the Board of Directors. Each board member has been delegated with a specific responsibility that is tailored to their background, talent, and resources that are available to them.

 

The third category is the Support Group and the Volunteers. The Support Group delivers expertise and assistance to the Thomas Sports Group, Inc. organizational activities and functions. Volunteers will function as mentors and coaches that help to operate the organization’s activities. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. Support Group and volunteers are recruited from higher education institutions, businesses, sports organizations, parents, and other areas of the community. Members of the board also serve as volunteers when needed. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. holds a Rules and Training session for board members and volunteers prior to each league activity. Volunteers are not financially compensated for their services. At the completion of each season, volunteers will receive formal recognition at award gatherings. The Thomas Sports Group, Inc. does compensate those stated in the by laws and referees and statisticians. By paying them, we feel it brings stability to our programs.

These funds will be used to purchase equipment, uniforms, trophies, lease gymnasium use In-kind, maintain ace fees, transportation expenses, referee fees,  statistician fees and other costs incurred. The Kickball gymnasium will be leased by the Furman Street Learning Center in Schenectady, NY. The basketball gymnasium will be leased by Career Center at Steinmetz in Schenectady, NY. Trophies and uniforms will be purchased from Depalmas Screen Printing 2044 Hamburg Street Schenectady, NY. Sports equipment will be acquired from Anaconda Sports Inc. 5 Corporate Drive Route 9 Clifton Park, NY 12065. The following are projected costs of operating the League for this year 2007:
