Post Re: Check In / Check Out Thread Beta
Hi, all...

People can be so mean! My niece called to tell me that I've forced them to go against my father's wishes and there would be a Memorial service for him. I think she was hoping I'd say I couldn't get there, but I said of course I'd be there. Then she reamed me for putting an obit in my local paper, and said that forced them to put a PROPER one in their paper; mine wasn't a proper obit, and they were mad because I didn't tell them it was in there.

Good grief! They left me alone to deal with my grief alone; now they're mad because I tried to deal with it!

Make sure you tell them!

And: I'm happy for you; you're finally getting a memorial service for your father! -In all that's been going on that is a small victory.

Edit to add a little about what's going on here:

I had a few beers with my brother in law last night (and some 'bitters') - this divorce thing is getting more and more complicated the more I hear about it

He seems fine though, not bitter or angry or mad or anything beyond what's reasonable ('reasonable' as in part of the 'coping with stuff'-thing; the how-many-steps-is-it?-thing!)

I'm getting more and more at home on my portable geek computer; just bought a Bluetooth-dongle for my PC today (cheap'ish little thing not much larger than the USB connector it connects to the PC with: in fact the only thing that sticks out of the USB port is the handle for when you need to pull it out  ) so now I don't need to fumble around with USB cables to transfer pictures and music (films, though, are much to large files to do it with such a slow device)

It was such a nice sunny day today that I called a friend and asked if she was in the mood to sit on some outdoors café with me for a cuppa... best part of spring is when you can do such things :)

Oh, and on the way home I was still in this fantastic mood so I Couldn't just go past the record store..... now listening to my new record. a Verve recording of Jazz Samba with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd Image - samba is such a 'summertime' rythm Image Image

PLUS, now I'm posting anyway, this (the red one) is one of the buildings of the local history museum literally just around the corner from me:

The English page of the museum.

I've had no internet for a week, not counting at work, can't do much personal stuff there, plus I've had a nasty cold for just as long. I think it's winding down now. *sniffles*

Watching a lot of TV tonight, I had some catching up to do on a couple of the series I follow.

Somehow I don't think I'll have my window open tonight. This is the cloud of volcanic ash as it currently (see timecode) looks... highest concentration right above my head:

Image

They keep telling us the only thing people on the ground should have from all that ash was the beauty of the sunset we had tonight...

You had a volCANO blow nearby?!! I didn't hear anything on the news! I wonder why not.

Maybe the world is coming to an end...earthquakes in Haiti, China, and wasn't there one in South America recently, too?

Mine explosions in West Virginia and China... and volcanos now?

looks for her helmet and armor.

Iceland and volcanoes kind of go together (and this one is about as far away from me as Rome -only difference is that there's no 'autobahn' from here to Iceland  )

Air quality monitoring devices (one's right here in my neighbourhood) have -however- not been measuring an increase in micro particles, so what remains is the nuisance to air travel; haven't you seen something about that on the news? -Britain, Scandinavia, France, Germany, the Benelux... due to all the volcanic ash up there where planes travel no planes travel these days in northern and central Europe! -To bad really, kinda ruins the Queens birthday for her (she's seventy today) that some of her guests can't come because their planes are grounded

I like your thinking

But I'm not sure the biological plague will be the next thing happening... I'm thinking the 'swine flu' was the first of these disasters

Although, it wasn't so much that flu as it was the media over-reaction to it that was a real pain in the A*** back then... you may just be right about this *starts taping up doors and windows and vents*

Nah, those are the planes actually flying! -you'll note they're ALL south of the Alps (xcept for some low flyers in France and one in Germany.

This is the same map (sorta, it's from here: http://www.flightradar24.com/ ) as it looks right now - the blue x'es are airports (I wonder why no Airports in Iceland shows on this map though):

I've been following that story. I read an article stating the same volcano erupted in 1821 for an entire year!

Some sort of normality has set in in the skies over Europe (insofar that people in tin cans in the air can be said to be normal).

An hour before midnight (right now)

In other news:

My little nephew becomes an adult (with all that that entails) in a week and I have no idea what to get him. Ideas please!

My sister still sounds confused whenever I mail with her - and there are still things she's not been entirely open about - I wonder if she's off her meds

This coming Saturday I'll be helping a friend transporting a load of old stuff (antiques, really) to a flea market (and back again) -We usually end up having beer and shots after that -and wake up on Sunday with a hangover :(

The QR-Code app for my 'tricorder' is in development -but thankfully there are on-line possibilities ;)

I'm watching a crappy documentary about UFOs on Tv - how do I know it's crappy? -because the images of mutilated parts of cows are pixelated

All of ^this just because I thought it was time someone posted something in here!

^Hi there! -and happy 'green guy in your drink' day ;)

Met up with mum and dad yesterday; mum wanted to give me my birthday present - which I had only just found: A small set of shelves where the shelves themselves are plastic boxes, intended to help me get rid of the mess of plastic bags and cardboard boxes I have leaning against a wall in my kitchen  (think I'll need to spray paint it though; white doesn't look too good in my grey and metal and black kitchen)

And I was at my nephew's 18'th birthday on Friday, he'd been cooking all day and after tasting what he'd made I'm not so sure he actually needs the cooking book my parent gave him
I gave him the "Necronomicon" (a collection of Lovecraft -Which I knew he wanted) and a bottle of nice gin (after all, my sister can't object to him having spirits any more  Funny thing though: how did his under age friends get hold of a bottle of absinthe to give him?)

I got ambushed by my mother: she set a date (one week from now) where they'll help me get some of the junk in my basement (and apartment) driven to the dump -or: recycling centre, as it's called these days, so now I have only one week to get all my stuff sorted and ready for pick up - not sure I'll make it Image

On the fun side, I bought one of those collections of magnetic English words an' such; I now have three Star Trek quotations on the side of my PC Image (alongside the "evil inside" magnetic button)

And I found the Star Trek (2009) version of the NOKIA Tune on-line and put it as my primary ringtone

I might go visit my parents after the 'junk day', good thing I'll have the internet there! - Used to be hell not being able to go on-line up there! but now I can stay there for days without getting ill  -oh, and I got myself a little x-tra battery pack; rechargeable gizmo from which I can charge any little device needing recharging on the go! (When I left my nephew's the other day I got to the station (no more than a platform with a ticket machine) about 40 minutes early (why didn't the time table thay gave me at the station here in town show the right times???) only to notice that i couldn't just catch an ep of something..... battery was all but empty at that time :( :wall: Image )

ooh! Junk day...the biggest problem with that is forcing yourself to say and believe...Yes, this is junk... ...at least it is for me...

Winter has returned here...we had snow the other day, and this morning there is a very heavy frost out there...sigh...I wonder if any of the flowers will bloom.

As for me, I am in mucho PAIN! My legs, my knees, and my left shoulder all hurt enough to give me problems standing up and taking those necessary two or three steps to get from wheelchair to recliner or bed or ...whatever.

I'm not telling anyone lest they get the idea that it's a reason to toss me into a nursing home.

My nieces and my father's wife have not spoken to me since he died...about 3 months now...no one has even checked to find out if I'm still alive.

Yeah, Junk Day - what a piece of work that is turning out to be...

Everything has to be sorted and put in the right container - that means I have to have everything ready and put up in reverse order so the things that are deep inside the car are the things that go in the container we'll come to last.

This is how the city recycling centres do it here:

Image

1: Cd's, dvd's and videotapes (While I do have a lot of tapes, I'm not ready to rid myself of them just right now)
1A: Toner and ink cartridges
2: Paper
3: Books (might have a (very) few of those)
4: Cardboard (I've got lots of that )
7: Window glass without frame (a little of that)
7: Window glass with frame
8: Bottles and preserves glasses (might have some of that)
9A: Small appliances (got three computers, two videos, several keyboards and a bunch of 'unsorted')
9 B: Monitors (think I have one of those, but it's scratched!)
10: Metals (perhaps a tiny amount of this)
11: Large appliances
12: Soft plastics (got a big bag of this)
13: Hard plastics (don't really think I have any -but you never know what turns up!)
14: Asbestos
16: Gardening whatsitcalled
17: Carpets
18: Large 'burnables' (perhaps some furniture)
18A: Clean wood
19: Tires without rims
19: Tires with rims
20: Small 'burnables' (definitely got some of that)
21: Asfalt
22: Dirt, gravel, sand
23: Gypsum plaster
24: Dump (or 'depot' as the modern term is)
25: Impregnated wood
26: Concrete
26A: White toilets and sinks
27: Reusable items (perhaps some furniture)
28: Clothing and shoes (oh, I might as well get rid of it, it's not as if I'll ever be that thin again)
29: Paper for shredding (if I get the time I'll look-see if I can sort out my boxes of personal papers and letters from banks an' such places)
30: Car batteries (nah!)
31: Batteries (every four weeks the garbagemen take 'em, so none of those)
32: Incandescent tubes and bulbs (I don't think so)
35: Bricks
37: Car windows
Dangerous chemicals (might have some paint somewhere)

Sorry, I'm just so busy with all this junk right now.
Pain, you say, I'm sorry to hear! the weather getting to you or is it a more permanent thing -hope not 'cuz there's only so much over-the-counter pain-killers can do...

Welllll, those weren't your best friends as it were -were they? Plus: maybe in time they will be able to 'forgive you' that you loved your dad more than they -apparently- did... My sister isn't talking to my mum!!! -now, how do you think that makes me feel  - My sister's been acting really weird lately and that new man of hers is (at least partly) to blame - I'm hoping time will mellow out the situation though, I can't stand it when people can't even talk to each other -I don't care if they love each other or not I just want them to be able to spend time together and have a nice time as a family (however dysfunctional (which I believe every family is to some point))

Anyways; hoping the best for you

Every time I log in here I fear that the site has vanished for good. I mean, sure it's the season of outdoors distractions an' so, but some day Flukie is going to realise that we're all sick of twirling our thumbs waiting for the second instalment of the comic strip Image

Turns out the city didn't keep the containers in the order their site said they would be in Image

Still, only took us about 1½ hour to clean out my stash of junk (didn't feel good to throw away old books just because I'd read them -same with VHS cassettes, never liked throwing away any sort of media :(

I totally forgot to take some pictures of all the stuff - not yet used to have a camera in my pocket I suppose.

After the junk run my parents had some stuff to do downtown, as did I, but we managed to meet soon after so I could give them a 'thank-you-for-the-help-beer&bitter', then dad suggested we go out and have lunch at the local pub (more beer and (this time: ) snaps) Then we had coffee (and brandy) at their place until dad went upstairs and we could hear him snoring... mum and I continued with beer and whiskey while debating my weird sister and whatever else came up - - - It was totally unintentional, but apparently we all needed a bit of drink that day (which was one of those where you could stay outside in the sun and warm weather for most of it :)

As it so happens it was the Norwegian Grunnlovsdag (constitution day).
Here's my dad celebrating it:

Image

At this point I did remember that I had a camera in my mobile device -plus I could bluetooth the image to mum's phone so she could MMS it to our Norwegian relatives. (My device is too advanced for that MMS-thing  )

Well, I know I should be here more often, but RL has been busy kicking me in the face. These people are still trying to drive me out of here, and now the new management is listening. I know he wants to change the rules and it would be a lot easier to do if I wasn't living here, so they've stepped up the harassment.

They sent me a letter saying my apartment wasn't clean and that is a violation of my lease and a basis for eviction. I have an Aide who comes in and mops floors, vacuums, does laundry, etc. AND I've been in other apartments here so I know mine is cleaner than some of the others; I just can't do anything about it, and have been unsuccessful in finding someone to speak for me.

They keep me in a constant state of upset.

I know exactly how bad that is -this sort of thing put me on a pension before my time!

Everybody's gone alright, and the new look (with the different starships on top depending on what you do and where you are) is very neat -a bit too wide for my tastes but it's very clean and stays on the central topic (but I miss the coffee mugs  )

So, erhm, what's been going on...

Well, my sister got the divorce and is now on a quest to find herself. Someone wrote an app. for the N900 to enable MMS* - this is good since my mother (the only person I'm likely to MMS with) isn't very much on-line (which is where my 'phone' is built to put images - it is an internet device withabuildinphone). I've been across the border to Germany a couple of times and now have serious problems with figuring out where to store all the bottles I keep buying there (found a very nice gin though - and a reasonable single malt  ), and another problem is to eat all the food I keep buying down there - hadda put some of it on freeze this time  . I've been watching a lot of Britcoms lately (Vicar of Dibley, Bread, You Rang M'Lord, The Royle Family, The League of Gentlemen, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Little Britain) and some other British stuff (The Jewel in the Crown, Monarch of the Glen, Two Fat Ladies) but not a lot of television outside news, debates and documentaries. I've had digital measuring devices put on all my radiators (more about this after the next meeting of the owners). I've changed my default ringtone to the one you hear in Star Trek (2009) and put on a personalized boot video...

Gotta go now, there's an ep of Waking the Dead on!

About two years ago my friend got a cat (of about three months of age) - she noticed (my friend, not the cat) that it was impossible to make absolutely sure that she got her 'pill' (the cat, not my friend) and began making plans about what should happen in case kittens should appear... I was suckered into these plans as I had long longed for the company of a cat.

As it happens, last Thursday I became the soon to be human to one of these two:

I'm still not allowed to see any images at all...bit by bit, things are going wrong here. First it was just pogo.com, and fewer and fewer games will load...now I can only play one or two games over there. I've tried all their suggestions and nothing works to correct it...now, jigzone.com won't load the puzzles for me anymore, I can't see ANY images anywhere, and, half the time I can't access TBBS, and other sites I like.

A neighbor came over to check it out and she can't find a problem...my anti-virus runs every morning; so does adaware, and they keep saying everything is fine...

I have the right Java, and I have no idea what else to do to fix this. It's very frustrating...it's driving me nuts!

Ok, I have switched to IE...now I can finally see images, but pogo and jigzone are still messed up...

You know, it's odd, but...originally, my reason for getting Firefox was that IE wouldn't let me come here, to Flukie's...why is it letting me in, now?

Firefox has been causing trouble since they forced me to upgrade it by saying that, if I didn't, I would no longer be able to go ANYwhere on the internet.

Saying that you won't be able to go anywhere on-line is probably just a scare-tactic to get you to up-grade/-date your software (with some truth to it, of course)
If you in the Help-menu in Firefox click the 'About Mozilla Firefox'-item, does the pop-up say that you are running Firefox version 3.6.6? -if not, then try 'Check for updates' in the Help-menu. (but my guess is that you have the newest version already).

Do you use any ad or flash blocking software? (NoScript perchance)

Those two sites you mention, I've just been there -seems fine from here.

I was just wondering if you had an ad-blocker or a flash-blocker installed, and the most popular flash-blocker is called NoScript (it's what most of us use to be rid of irritating animated ads on the T-BBS ;) )

The NoScript add-on blocks Java-scripts from working in the browser but the games on those two sites are made as scripts. I had to allow those sites before I could use them! I thought that maybe you had something like the NoScript add-on installed and somehow not cleared those game sites in the add-on...

Oh well... the usual thing to do when a browser has 'developed random features' (that's a little computer engineer humour ;) ) is to clear cache and cookies (this will however make the browser forget all passwords, so you'll need to have those handy for after you've cleared cache and cookies!

Clearing cache:
Tools-menu + Clear Caches-item!

Clearing cookies:
Tools-menu + Options-item + Privacy-tab in the pop-up + Show Cookies...-button + Remove All Cookies-button in the new pop-up!

Oh, and: after that it's a good idea to restart Firefox.

ghost07 Oh! I thought I answered this!

I can see the pictures if I use IE; that's a nice looking garden you have.

I'm beginning to think my problems are due to firefox upgrading...they upDATE every day, but it seems everything began going sour when they upGRADED to that 3.7 whatever...it just doesn't work right anymore....and I am, of course, TERRIFIED to delete it and download it again.

Well Ghost & dane, not everyone is gone. Some of us are in a state of transition. As many know, I recently lost my job due to plant closure. That in it's self was difficult. Having to say goodbye to friends that you've made over 20 years. But fear not, Q2 scored a new job in Ohio. Yea, I'm in the process of relocating from western New York to a town just west of Cleveland, OH. That's why I've been scarce around these parts. I've got to get up at 5 AM to be to work by 7AM. By the time I get back to my temporary "apartment" at night it's 6PM. I'm usually in bed by 9:30PM and the cycle starts again. Not to mention I've been going back to NY most weekends to take care of that house and get things ready for our move.

Cayla, if you happen to see this, I sent you a PM over at TrekBBS. We bought a house in Amherst, OH. I don't remember exactly where you and your hubby live, but I like to think we're going to be (almost) neighbors. All in all folks, for all the crap and hell I've had to endure for months, Mrs.Q2 & I have weathered through it pretty well. If we could just get or WNY home sold, things would be pretty damn good.

I promise to try to check in more often. Now that things seem to be settling down, I should have a little more free time here and there. Glad to see you folks are well. Hang in there. Peace.

OOH! Where is the house in NY? I'll take it  sadly, I have no money to buy it, though, so you'd have to just gift it to me ghost07 :smoke:

I hope things settle for you quickly...do you LIKE your new job?

Well, Ghost, as much as I'd love to make your year, can't gift it away. Need that pesky equity to pay towards the new home.

I guess I do like my new job. It's challenging. I've not been challenged (professionally) for a few years now. It's exciting at times, confusing as hell other times. Main thing is I'm still learning and adapting. Just can't wait for this relocation process to play itself out. I miss coming home after a long day of work to sit and relax with my wife. Miss her quite a bit, but the up side is we'll be together this weekend.

Thanks a bunch for taking intrest!

By the way Flukie, I was playing with the board settings and LOVE the Star Trek theme. How can you use it on the board with out the internet police paying you a visit on Paramount's (tm.) behalf? My daughter just took the NYS bar exam and can be made available for a small fee. . . . . ;) :butt:

Hiya everybody!

First of all... kitties!!! :D

Ghostie, are you still on dial-up?

When your neighbor comes over again, have them look in the temp folders, there is probably a bunch of leftover junk from previous installations of things. Anything in a temp folder can safely be deleted.

Specifically, C:/temp and C:/windows/temp

Also, you might need to upgrade Flash, http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Adaware used to be good, but Spybot Search & Destroy is much better at finding 'problems'.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Well, that's all I can think of at the moment. :)

Q2 I found the template somewhere else, let them deal with the lawsuits.

*passes cold Yuenglings to Q2 and _dane, and lemonade to Ghostie*

ok...I always do the disc cleanup whenever I go offline, so the temp folders are deleted, aren't they?

Yeah, my neighbor was horrified when she found out I hadn't updated the Adobe thing...but I didn't know what it was...anyway, that is now updated...it didn't help anything, though.

Does this Spybot thing cost anything? and do I have to un-install Adaware before installing it?

After everything, I can see images if I use IE, but not if I use Firefox, and my pogo games and the Jigzone site won't load most of the games or even the jigsaw puzzles...Jigzone keeps telling me to check my internet connection. How? I've no idea. oh, yes, I'm still on dial-up; I can't afford the hi-speed stuff. ghost07

Back again like a bad habbit, I'll most likely be absent over the next week as the holiday nears. Maybe I'll be able to post more in the coming months.

Hey Joel, good seeing you around.
